DONA CARMEN - Mar del Plata

The Dona Carmen wreck isn't about depth or vibrant coral, let's be clear. This site is pure history, a tangible piece of Mar del Plata's fishing heritage. At a mere 3 metres, it’s less a dive and more a snorkel with a purpose, but don't let the shallowness fool you. We love exploring the remains of this wooden fishing vessel, its skeleton slowly disintegrating into the sandy bottom. You’ll feel the gentle push and pull of the Atlantic surge as you glide over the ribs of the hull, and the way the light filters down through the surface chop is really something. Our favourite part is seeing how quickly life reclaims these structures. Small schools of silversides dart between the planks, and we’ve often spotted blennies peeking out from crevices. It's a fantastic spot for photographers looking for an atmospheric shot, especially on a cloudy day when the light creates a moody, almost monochromatic scene. Just remember, strong onshore winds can make visibility choppy, so aim for calmer mornings. This isn't a site for ticking off big species, it’s for appreciating the quiet drama of a wreck becoming part of the ocean floor again.
