Elvira y Pedro - Mar del Plata

Elvira y Pedro isn't about tropical fish or soaring visibility. This is a cold water wreck dive, and we love it for its moody, almost ghostly character. The twin fishing trawlers, Elvira and Pedro, went down together in a storm back in the 1930s, resting upright in only seven metres of water. It’s a shallow dive, easy enough for newer wreck divers, but still offers plenty of intrigue. You're not dropping into a kaleidoscope of colour here, but the light filtering through the green water gives everything a dramatic glow. We've spent many a dive finning around the hulls, peering into cargo holds, imagining the rough seas that claimed them. Look closely for the local residents: crabs scuttling over rusted metal, anemones clinging to the superstructure, and schools of silversides darting in and out of the shadows. It’s a completely different vibe from your typical coral reef, a proper taste of maritime history beneath the waves. Best dived on a calm day; even at seven metres, surge can make things interesting.
