General Baldissera Mástil - Mar del Plata

The General Baldissera Mástil site in Mar del Plata is... well, it’s not really a dive site in the traditional sense. It's more of a historical marker, a mast from the sunken cargo ship General Baldissera, sticking defiantly out of the water. We've finned around it a few times, mostly on the way to other sites, and it's certainly got character. If you’re expecting a deep wreck exploration, this isn’t it. The mast itself is all that’s visible, rising maybe a metre from the surface. But for snorkelers or very shallow freedivers, it's a surprising little ecosystem. The structure is encrusted with mussels and barnacles, and we've spotted small crabs scuttling amongst them. Schools of silversides often congregate around its base, flashing in the sun. It's a quick, easy stop, great for getting comfortable in the water or just enjoying a different kind of interaction with a wreck. We’d suggest checking it out if you’re passing by, perhaps as a warm-up before heading to the deeper, more intact sections of the Baldissera. It's a nice nod to the ship's history, right there on the surface.
