Gitano - Mar del Plata
The *Gitano* wreck in Mar del Plata isn't a deep dive, not even close. At a max depth of just two metres, it’s more of a snorkel or a free-dive adventure, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's not worth your time. We love it because it’s a tangible piece of history, the remains of a fishing trawler that ran aground decades ago, now thoroughly integrated into the shoreline ecosystem. You'll spend your time here exploring the broken hull, watching how the surge pushes and pulls through the skeletal remains of the deck. The light filters down, bright and clear, illuminating the dense growth of mussels and barnacles that encrust every surface. Small crabs dart for cover, and we've often seen schools of silversides flickering around the shadowy parts of the engine room. It’s a completely different vibe from a typical reef, a stark reminder of human endeavour slowly being reclaimed by the ocean. Our favourite time to visit is on a calm morning, just after high tide, when the water is clearest and the current is minimal.
