GRAL. ALVEAR - Mar del Plata

The Gral. Alvear is something special in Mar del Plata, a shallow wreck dive that just keeps giving. This old steamship, torpedoed back in 1918, lies broken up in only 4 meters of water. It means fantastic bottom time and usually good light penetration, even if the visibility isn’t always stellar. We love finning over the scattered sections of the hull, peeking into what’s left of the engine room. You'll often find conger eels tucked into crevices, their heads poking out as you drift by. What really makes the Alvear for us is how accessible it is, even for newer divers. The wreck structure is home to an incredible amount of life. Schools of silversides shimmer around the rusted plating, and we’ve spotted plenty of crabs scuttling amongst the debris. Our favourite time to dive it is on a calm morning, just after sunrise, when the light catches the metallic hues of the wreck and the water is at its clearest. It’s a site that tells a story, and you get to be right there, exploring its chapters.
