GRUA D.H.2 - Mar del Plata

The GRUA D.H.2, just off Mar del Plata, is a cracker of a shallow wreck. At only seven metres, it’s a site we always swing by when we’re in the area, perfect for a relaxed dive after a longer one or even for a longer safety stop. What you’re diving is the remains of an old floating crane, sunk back in the 1960s after a storm ripped through the harbour. It’s surprisingly intact for its age and depth. We love swimming through the old engine room, where light filters in through the top, illuminating schools of silversides that dart and weave. Our favourite part is navigating the structure of the crane arm itself, a skeletal frame now completely encrusted with mussels and anemones. Look closely, and you’ll spot nudibranchs grazing the hydroids. Visibility here can be a bit changeable, especially after heavy rains, so we always try to hit it on a calm morning. The sheer amount of fish life, mostly smaller blennies and gobies tucked into every nook, makes it a consistently engaging dive. It’s a site that rewards slow exploration.
