HILSA MIRTHA C - Mar del Plata

The Hilsa Mirtha C is one of those wrecks that just screams character, even at a mere four metres. It’s a shallow splash, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it's boring. We love how the wreck is really coming apart now, scattered across the seafloor – it creates these fantastic nooks and crannies for exploration. You can poke your head into the old cargo holds, or trace the outline of the collapsed superstructure. What really makes it special for us is how quickly the local marine life has moved in. Schools of silversides shimmer through the gaps, and we’ve seen some surprisingly plump conger eels peeking out from under the twisted metal plates. Visibility can be a bit hit or miss in Mar del Plata, but on a good day, with a bit of sunlight filtering through the green water, the wreck just glows. It’s an easy dive, perfect for photographers wanting to practice on ambient light wreck shots, or anyone just looking for a relaxed dive with a bit of history attached. Our favourite tip? Go on a weekday morning; you often get the place to yourself, and the light is usually best then.
