Inirwana - Mar del Plata

Mar del Plata isn’t exactly a tropical mecca, but Inirwana offers something completely different, a refreshing change from sun-drenched reefs. It’s a shallow wreck, only four metres deep, making it perfect for newer divers or for getting multiple dives in without worrying about deco. What we love about Inirwana is its character, a fishing vessel that sank in 1982, now utterly colonised by mussels and anemones. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the way the light filters through the green water, giving everything an eerie, almost ethereal glow. The wreck itself is relatively intact, and you can swim through the holds, feeling the chill of the Atlantic water and spotting the resident crabs scuttling amongst the growth. Look closely, and you’ll find nudibranchs inching their way across the rusty metal and small schools of fish darting in and out of the shadows. It’s a slow, contemplative dive, more about the history and the unexpected life than big pelagics. We’d suggest going on a calm day for the best visibility, as surge can kick up the sediment. It’s our favourite Mar del Plata dive for a relaxed afternoon exploring maritime history.
