M.O.P. NO.5 - Mar del Plata

Okay, so M.O.P. NO.5 isn't going to win any awards for depth, but honestly, it doesn't need to. This old lighter vessel, sitting in a mere four metres of water just off Mar del Plata, is one of our favourite shore dives when the conditions are right. We love it because it’s so accessible, a perfect long-weekend escape. The wreck itself is pretty broken up, but that’s its charm. You’re not exploring intact cabins; you’re navigating skeletal ribs and twisted metal plates, imagining the storms that must have ripped her apart. Visibility can be a bit temperamental, so pick a calm day with minimal swell, ideally after a few days of settled weather. On a good day, sunlight filters through the surface, dappling the metalwork and illuminating the clouds of little crabs scuttling over the debris. We've seen some surprisingly large conger eels here, tucked deep into crevices, and the anemones that have colonised every surface glow with colour. It’s a gentle dive, perfect for photographers wanting to practice wide-angle shots without the pressure of depth, or for anyone who just wants to spend an hour poking around a genuine piece of maritime history.
