MARIONGA J. CAIRIS - Mar del Plata

The Mar del Plata coast often gets a bad rap, but if you’re patient, the *Marionga J. Cairis* offers a slice of history that’s genuinely compelling. This old steamship, a significant vessel at 122.7 metres long, lies in shallow water, only 8 metres down. We love it because it’s surprisingly intact for its age and exposure, making for a truly atmospheric dive. You’ll drop onto a vast, shadowy form, the hull rising impressively from the sandy seabed. We often find the visibility here can be a bit hit-or-miss, so go on a calm day after a few days without heavy winds; that's when it truly shines. Even on an average day, the sheer scale of the wreck is remarkable. Schools of Patagonian silversides often shimmer around the superstructure, and we’ve spotted plenty of king crabs scuttling amongst the plates. Our favourite part is exploring the deeper sections of the holds, where the light filters down in eerie shafts, revealing rusted machinery and the occasional squat lobster. It’s an accessible wreck dive, suited for anyone who loves exploring history underwater without needing advanced skills.
