MONONA - Mar del Plata

We’ve dived a lot of wrecks over the years, but Monona holds a special place. It’s not about grand scale or deep penetration; this is a shallow wreck, only 5 metres down, right off Mar del Plata. What we love about it is the sheer volume of life that has claimed it. The old motor vessel lies broken, its steel ribs creating a perfect habitat for everything from small octopus tucked into crevices to schools of small fish darting through the superstructure. Our favourite time to dive Monona is definitely on a calm morning, when the sun filters through the relatively shallow water. You can spend a good hour exploring the different sections, finding rusted machinery and imagining its past. It’s a gentle dive, really, suited for anyone who appreciates the history of a wreck and the way nature reclaims man-made objects. You’ll often find us just hovering, watching the small crabs scuttling over the hull, a stark contrast to the busy beaches just above. Just watch out for the occasional fishing line snagged on the wreck, a minor hazard but one to be aware of.
