NORMA MABEL - Mar del Plata

Okay, let's talk about the Norma Mabel. This isn't your typical deep blue wreck dive, and that's precisely why we love it. Sitting in a mere two metres of water right off the coast of Mar del Plata, it's more like a submerged art installation than a grave. You'll find yourself practically walking to the site, wading out from the shore until the rusting hull emerges, a skeletal frame against the sky. This shallow depth means sunlight penetrates everywhere, illuminating the ship's twisted metalwork. We're talking about a wreck so close to the surface that you can hear the waves breaking over the deck, a rhythmic creak of metal on the calmer days. Our favourite time to visit is early morning, before the wind picks up, when the water is at its calmest and the light slants just right through the structure. The wreck itself is heavily encrusted, a patchwork of mussels and barnacles, and the spaces within are perfect hideouts for schools of small fish. Keep an eye out for juvenile hake darting amongst the beams. This site is a photographer's dream, especially if you're into wide-angle shots with the surface visible. It suits anyone looking for a unique, accessible wreck experience without the need for heavy gear or deep diving skills.
