PODEROSO - Mar del Plata

Poderoso isn’t your typical deep wreck adventure, but we absolutely love it for what it is: a shallow, accessible slice of history. This old trawler sits right off the beach in Mar del Plata, her skeletal ribs and bow poking out of the surf at low tide. You’re looking at a maximum depth of 2 metres, often less, which means long bottom times and plenty of light for photography. We usually head out in the late morning, after the initial morning chill burns off and before the afternoon crowds really pick up. Visibility can be a bit variable, depending on recent weather, but on a good day, the water around Poderoso turns a surprisingly clear green, letting you trace the outline of the hull. Crabs scuttle in the shadows of the twisted metal, and shoals of small fish dart in and out of the rusty framework. It’s a fantastic spot for snorkelers or new divers getting comfortable around structure. Our favourite part? The way the light plays through the exposed sections of the wreck, silhouetting the schools of fish – it’s really quite photogenic. Just keep an eye on the tides; it makes a big difference to how much of the wreck is exposed or comfortably diveable.
