Primero de Vigo - Mar del Plata

Primero de Vigo, sitting just 8 metres down off Mar del Plata, is a cracker of a wreck for anyone keen on getting up close with a bit of history without the deep dive fuss. We love it because it’s incredibly accessible, an easy jaunt for beginners and a fun potter for experienced divers looking for something a bit different. The wreck itself is a former fishing vessel, and while its history is a bit hazy, its current state is wonderfully colonised. You’ll find its skeleton draped in thick blankets of mussels and barnacles, drawing in a surprising amount of smaller fish. We've seen schools of juvenile pollock darting through gaps in the hull, and the occasional spider crab scuttling across a rusty beam. The visibility can be a bit variable here, so we always suggest picking a day with calm seas and heading out in the morning; it just makes for a more relaxed dive. What really makes it for us is the tangible sense of a working vessel reclaimed by the ocean, all within arm's reach.
