TIJERETA - Mar del Plata

Tijereta isn’t just a wreck dive; it’s a history lesson submerged. This former launch vessel, a casualty of a storm back in the 1980s, now lies broken in two sections, just a short boat ride from Mar del Plata’s port. We love how the wreck’s fragmented state creates so many nooks and crannies for exploration. You can swim through the old engine room, peek into the collapsed wheelhouse, or just drift over the hull plates, now thick with mussels and anemones. The real draw here, for us, is the sheer number of fish that have claimed Tijereta as home. Schools of hake and pollock swirl around the superstructure, so dense at times they block out the sun. Keep an eye out for the occasional Patagonian blenny peeking from a crevice, or a curious sea snail slowly making its way across a rusted beam. It’s an accessible dive, relatively shallow, so it’s great for those looking to get their first taste of wreck diving without deep decompression obligations. Our favourite time to go is late morning, after the initial boat traffic has thinned out. Just remember, it’s a dangerous wreck in places, so good buoyancy control is key.
