VERAMAR - Mar del Plata

The Veramar isn’t your typical Caribbean postcard wreck dive. This is proper, moody Atlantic diving, and that’s precisely why we love it. Lying in just 6 metres of water off Mar del Plata, this old steamship met its end back in 1928, and it feels every bit of that history. What you get at the Veramar is immediate immersion into a historical scene. The wreck itself is quite broken up, but you can still make out the distinct form of a steamship, with hull plates scattered and ribs exposed like a skeleton. It’s a shallow dive, which means bottom time isn't an issue, letting you really pick through the details. We’ve found huge shoals of silversides hugging the twisted metal, and sometimes you’ll spot a lone octopus tucked into a crevice, watching you with an almost suspicious gaze. The low light often adds a dramatic filter, making the green-grey water feel truly atmospheric. Dive it on a calm day, if you can, to appreciate the delicate details of the colonising life. It's a great spot for photographers keen on capturing something a bit different, something with real character, rather than just pretty colours.
