Naufrágio Castor - Abrolhos

The Castor wreck in Abrolhos is one of those dives that just *feels* old, in the best way. It’s a wooden freighter, sunk way back in 1937, and the structure has softened with time, worn smooth by the ocean. We love how the hull has become a canvas for the local corals, especially the big mustard hill corals and the lettuce corals. They’ve completely overgrown sections, giving the wreck a fuzzy, organic outline rather than sharp metal edges. Dropping onto the Castor, you quickly get a sense of its history. You can still make out the ribs of the ship, creating archways and swim-throughs where red snapper hang out in the shadows. Look closely and you’ll spot Caribbean bait prawns tucked into crevices and green porcelain crabs scuttling across the coral. We find the atmosphere here really suits divers who appreciate historical sites and the way marine life reclaims them. It’s not about penetration or huge schools of fish, but the quiet beauty of a man-made structure slowly returning to nature.
