Bajo del Monstruo - Malpelo Island

Bajo del Monstruo, “Monster’s Shallow,” sounds daunting, and honestly, sometimes it lives up to the name. This isn't a gentle drift. We’ve had dives here where the current feels like a freight train, ripping past the rocky outcropping. But that current, for us, is precisely the draw. It’s a magnet for pelagics, and that’s what Malpelo is all about. When the conditions are right, we love dropping in and tucking ourselves behind the main structure, watching the show unfold. Swarms of Amarillo snapper shimmer in the blue, occasionally parting for a cruising Galapagos shark. You’ll often spot massive schools of razor surgeonfish, a pulsing silver mass, and we’ve even caught sight of elegant shortbill spearfish making passes further out. Look closely in the cracks for freckled morays, and keep an eye on the sand for the odd Galapagos garden eel swaying in the surge. It’s a site for experienced divers comfortable with dynamic conditions, a place where you really feel the raw power of the ocean.
