Cantil del Barco - Malpelo Island

Cantil del Barco is classic Malpelo, a sheer rock face dropping into the blue, and it’s one of our favourite spots to just hang and watch the show. We’ve seen more Harlequin Bass schooling here than anywhere else, their stripes flickering as they dart in and out of the crevices. Look closer on the wall itself and you’ll find those tiny treasures: Key Worm Eels poking their heads out, Dark-spotted Snake Eels slithering between the mustard hill coral. We love the feeling of drifting along this wall, the current often gentle enough to allow for a really relaxed exploration. Keep an eye out for those big Ocean Triggerfish, always patrolling, and we’ve had some fantastic encounters with groups of Sergeant-majors here too. It’s not about grand pelagics every time, though they certainly visit, but about the sheer density of reef fish and the stunning coral formations, particularly the massive starlet coral heads. This is a dive for those who appreciate the details as much as the big picture, a true Malpelo experience without the relentless current of some of the other sites.
