El Arrecife - Malpelo Island

El Arrecife, or “The Reef,” at Malpelo isn't your typical colourful garden, but it’s still one of our favourite dives for a completely different reason. It’s all about the pelagics here. We love the sheer energy of the place, the way the current often sweeps you along a wall that just drops into the deep blue. You’ll be looking out, not down. We’ve seen false killer whales cruise by, their sleek forms ghosting through the water, and once, a huge school of escolar just materialised out of the gloom. The reef itself has some interesting crevices where jewel morays peek out, but honestly, your eyes will be glued to the open water. Keep an ear out too; sometimes you can hear the deep thrum of a passing blackfish before you even see them. This spot is definitely for divers who appreciate the big stuff and aren't afraid of a bit of a drift. Don't waste time looking for nudibranchs; scan the horizon for those bigger movements.
