El Freezer - Malpelo Island

El Freezer. The name itself suggests a chill, and sometimes you’ll feel it, but what you’re really feeling is the sheer volume of fish. It’s located on Malpelo’s exposed western side, so expect some surge. We’d suggest tucking into one of the smaller caverns here, hunkering down, and just watching the theatre unfold. Our favourite spot? A deep crevice around 25 metres. We’ve spent whole dives here, just mesmerised by the currents sweeping through, bringing with them an endless parade. You’ll see schools of jacks so dense they almost block out the light. Then, out of the blue, those unmistakable silhouettes – hammerheads. Not just one or two, but often a dozen, gliding past with an effortless power that never gets old. We’ve seen dog snappers here, huge ones, eyeing up the smaller fry, and occasionally a great hammerhead will cruise by, making everything else feel tiny. It’s a site for experienced divers comfortable with surge and deep water, rewarding patience with incredible, high-octane pelagic action.
