Elsy Bar - Malpelo Island

Elsy Bar is a Malpelo classic, and for good reason. We’ve always found it reliable for those exhilarating encounters. Drop in and you’re often met with schools of blue runners, a shimmering wall of silver that just pulses with the current. It’s not uncommon to spot Caribbean reef sharks cruising by, their movements smooth and deliberate against the deeper blue. Look closer on the rocky outcrops and you might pick out a reef scorpionfish, perfectly camouflaged, or a shy orange-spotted blenny peeking from its hole. The real magic here is the sheer number of fish. We love how the longspine squirrelfish congregate in shadowed crevices, their eyes reflecting your torchlight. This site really shines for divers who appreciate the subtle details alongside the big pelagic shows. It’s not a hard dive, but a good dive guide helps you spot the smaller, unique characters like the hourglass clingfish, clinging tight to the rocks, or the Molly Miller, darting between the crevices. For us, Elsy Bar consistently delivers that rich, wild Malpelo feel.
