La Cara del Fantasma - Malpelo Island

La Cara del Fantasma is a site we’ve always enjoyed, not just for the sharks, but for the sheer volume of fish sometimes. Dropping down, you’ll often find yourself in a thick cloud of Panama sergeant majors and Galapagos gregories, swirling around the rock face. It’s like being in a living, breathing aquarium, but on a massive scale. We’ve had dives here where the fusiliers were so dense you could barely make out the divers ahead. This place is a magnet for the bigger stuff too. Bull sharks are regulars, cruising along the deeper ledges, and we’ve even spotted the occasional Pacific spotted scorpionfish camouflaged on the rocks if you look hard enough. Keep an eye out for jewel morays poking their heads from crevices. The current here can be ripping, so it’s definitely one for experienced divers who are comfortable with drift dives and know how to manage their air in surge. Our favourite way to dive it is to take your time, letting the current carry you along the wall, just soaking in the chaos.
