La Catedral - Malpelo Island

La Catedral. You hear the name and expect grandeur, and it delivers. We’re talking about an immense underwater archway, carved by centuries of surge, that lets you swim right through a rocky outcrop. It’s less about delicate corals here and more about the raw power of the ocean, felt in the gentle push and pull as you glide through. Inside, the light dims, then spills back in as you exit, a truly dramatic reveal. We’ve often found ourselves slowing down, just watching the schools of jacks swirl outside the entrance, a shimmering curtain against the deep blue. Keep an eye out for the resident chestnut morays tucked into the cracks, and we’ve spotted swordfish slicing through the open water beyond the arch, a rare treat. This site is for divers who appreciate dramatic topography and pelagic encounters over intricate reef systems. It’s a powerful experience, best enjoyed when the surge isn't too strong, allowing you to really soak in the scale of the place. It’s one of our favourite spots on Malpelo for that feeling of being a small part of something massive.
