La Ferreteria - Malpelo Island

La Ferreteria, for us, is classic Malpelo. You drop in and feel the current immediatey. It’s usually pulling you, often at a decent clip, but that’s the deal here. This site sits right in the path of the big pelagics, so strap in for some action. We usually hug the wall, letting the current do the work as we scan the blue. This is where you’ll spot those massive schools of dog snapper, thick enough to momentarily block out the light. We've also had incredible luck with black marlin here, streaking past with their sails down. Keep an eye out for blennies too, the Sabertooth and Fishgod Blennies are always a treat to find tucked into the crevices. It’s a dive for those comfortable with strong currents and happy to drift, keeping a sharp lookout for the bigger stuff. You'll likely see barracuda hovering, maybe a sailfish if you're lucky, and often the graceful flight of trunkfish.
