Why dive here
With 71+ marine species recorded in the area - including barracuda and pufferfish - La Montanita offers some of Malpelo Island's richest pinnacle diving. Water ranges 28-30°C, warmest September, October, November.
La Montanita is where Malpelo truly flexes its muscles, and we love it for that. It’s not just a dive, it’s a full-body encounter with the ocean’s raw power. From the moment you drop in, you’re often swept into a powerful current that funnels you along the wall, bringing you face-to-face with the resident Caribbean reef sharks. We’ve seen them cruising by, almost close enough to touch, indifferent to our presence. The wall itself is a tapestry of life, even with the current trying to pull you away. Look closely and you’ll spot lavender rope sponges clinging on, alongside star corals and ten-ray star corals, providing shelter for the smaller stuff. We’ve often picked out black hamlets darting between crevices, and a particularly bold banded cleaner shrimp setting up shop. But the real show here is the pelagic action. Keep an eye out into the blue. We've had phenomenal encounters with huge schools of snapper and grunt here, so dense they sometimes block out the light above. It’s a site for experienced divers, no doubt, those comfortable with strong currents and focused on big animal encounters rather than leisurely reef exploration. Our best advice? Stay close to your guide, embrace the drift, and keep your eyes peeled for the unexpected.
