La Puerta del Cielo - Malpelo Island

La Puerta del Cielo, or "Gate of Heaven," is exactly what it sounds like. We love it for the drama. It’s an archway, a proper swim-through carved into the rock, that just funnels you into the blue. You drift through, and it feels like you're being spat out into the open ocean, the visibility stretching for what feels like miles. The resident population of huge hammerheads here is just astonishing. They cruise the depths beyond the arch, shadows appearing out of the gloom, then resolving into these magnificent, powerful creatures. We’ve also seen oceanic manta rays gliding by, their wingtips almost brushing the rock face as they pass. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too, tucked into crevices. Chestnut morays often peer out, and we’ve spotted rainbow scorpionfish clinging to the rocks, almost invisible until they twitch. This site suits divers who are comfortable with a bit of current and aren't easily spooked by big pelagics. It’s not a site for poking around in the sand; it’s all about the thrill of the swim-through and the magnificent creatures it attracts. Dive it early morning if you can, before the sun gets too high. The light through the archway is incredible then.
