La Roca - Malpelo Island

Okay, La Roca. If you're coming to Malpelo, this is probably one of the sites you've seen in a highlight reel, and for good reason. It’s got a bit of everything we love about this wild place. You drop in, and immediately, you're in the thick of it. The schools of porkfish and king mullet are so dense sometimes, they genuinely dim the light coming from above. It's not just a few fish, it’s a living wall. We’ve finned through them when the current is mild, just letting them part around us. Keep an eye out for Caribbean reef sharks cruising the edges of those bait balls, they’re always around, curious but chill. Look closer at the rock face itself; the sheer variety of smaller stuff here is incredible. Shy hamlets dart into the crevices, and we’ve spent ages just watching imitator blennies doing their thing. The corals, like the sunray lettuce and thin finger corals, make for some great macro photography if you can tear your eyes away from the big stuff. La Roca is for the diver who wants a full sensory experience. Expect the buzz of a thousand fish, the pull of the current reminding you where you are, and that constant anticipation of what’s next. It’s a site that demands you pay attention, but it rewards you with something new every time. We'd suggest hitting this early in the morning, before the current picks up too much, for a slightly more relaxed drift through the schools.
