La Torta - Malpelo Island

La Torta has always been our pick for a dive that truly shows Malpelo’s wild side. It’s not just a dive, it’s an event. We often drop in early, before the sun gets too high, hoping to catch the deeper currents bringing in the big stuff. The site itself is a submerged pinnacle, a massive rock that just seems to magnetise pelagics. You’ll descend into a blue so deep it almost hurts your eyes, keeping one eye on the open water. We’ve had countless encounters with silky sharks here, gliding past with that unnerving grace, sometimes just a few metres away. Look for the massive schools of razor surgeonfish, a shimmering curtain that parts as you swim through. There are often hammerheads deeper down, sometimes hundreds of them, a moving carpet of grey shapes against the darker blue. We love the sheer unpredictability of La Torta. One dive might bring blue sharks cruising by, another a massive whale shark just lumbering through the thermocline. It’s a site for experienced divers comfortable with strong currents and deep water, a place where you just let the ocean show you what it has.
