Los Cables - Malpelo Island
Los Cables is one of those Malpelo sites we still talk about months later. It’s not about huge schools of hammerheads, though they’re often around. This spot, tucked onto the island’s northern side, is all about the little things – the incredible macro life that takes a minute to slow down and really appreciate. We love dropping in here, letting the slight current guide us along the wall, eyes peeled. You'll spot reef scorpionfish camouflaged against the dark rock, perfectly still. Keep an eye out for the shy mimic blennies, popping in and out of crevices, and the surprisingly colourful surge clingfish clinging to the reef. The corals here, like the smooth star coral and maze coral, create fantastic miniature cities for all these tiny residents. It's a photographer's dream if you’ve got a macro lens and some patience. We’d suggest going in the morning if you can, when the light is still soft and the reef is just waking up. This site is best for divers who love to hunt for the unusual, who aren't just chasing the big pelagics.
