Owen Shoals
Why dive here
With 71+ marine species recorded in the area - including barracuda and pufferfish - Owen Shoals offers some of Malpelo Island's richest reef diving. Water ranges 28-30°C, warmest September, October, November.
Owen Shoals is classic Malpelo, a deep pinnacle rising from the gloom where the big stuff hangs out. We've often found ourselves in the middle of hammerhead schools here, especially early morning. The corals are healthy, a good backdrop for the schooling jacks and the occasional Galapagos shark cruising through. It’s a site for experienced divers comfortable with deeper profiles and potentially strong currents.
