Palacio de la Cherna - Malpelo Island

Palacio de la Cherna. Even the name sounds regal, and honestly, it lives up to it. We love this site for its sheer wall of fish, a living tapestry that shifts and shimmers. Drop down here and you're immediately enveloped by the schools. Seriously, we're talking thousands of these guys – the Cave Bass and the Porgy – creating a moving curtain that can actually dim the light. It’s a place for divers who appreciate the big picture, the grand scale. You’ll find yourself just hanging, watching the show, as Sammy Johnson and his mates cruise past. Keep an eye out for the Spotted Trunkfish, they’re often weaving through the bigger schools. The corals here, like the Maze and Golfball varieties, provide plenty of texture to the wall itself, little ledges and overhangs for gobies to duck into. Our favourite trick is to find a spot halfway down and just let the currents gently push you along, observing the whole spectacle. This isn’t a macro site, it's about the feeling of being part of a massive, thriving ecosystem.
