Zona de Buceo 1 - Malpelo Island

Zona de Buceo 1, often just called "The Wall" by the liveaboard crews, is where you go when you want that Malpelo rush. This isn't a gentle drift. You drop into the blue, often feeling the surge before you even hit your safety stop. Our best dives here have always been early morning, before the full sun hits, when the schooling hammerheads are still cruising deeper, just off the drop-off. You’re looking for those deep-water thermoclines, which often mean bigger shark action. The site itself is a sheer vertical wall, disappearing into the abyss. We’ve spent hours here just hanging in the blue, scanning the distant water for the telltale silhouettes. It’s not about intricate coral; it’s about the big stuff, the sheer scale. We’ve seen hundreds of silvertips here, curious and bold, and the occasional whale shark cruising by, just a ghost in the distant visibility. Keep an eye out for prodigious schools of blackbar blennies darting in and out of the wall’s crevices, and the flashes of great barracuda patrolling the edges. This site is for experienced divers who are comfortable with strong currents and deep blue water, the kind of place where you feel incredibly small and alive.
