Bicycle Slope, Kubu - Lombok & Gili Islands
Bicycle Slope in Kubu is a surprisingly cool little artificial reef, sitting between the main Kubu reef and the Boga wreck. We often end up here for a second dive, and it always delivers something interesting. It’s a sandy slope dressed with motorbikes, concrete structures, and rebar, sunk to about 15 metres, though you can drop to 22m if you fancy a poke around the edges. What we love about Bicycle Slope is how quickly marine life has adopted it. We’ve spent solid minutes watching Cheekscale Dwarfgobies darting around, and the Palebarred Reefgobies are always a treat. Look closely, and you’ll find Gardiner's Headshield Slugs trundling over the metal. It’s not a grand wreck full of penetration, but it's a fantastic critter hunt. Schools of Glassy Cardinalfish shimmer over the artificial structures, and we’ve spotted Elegant Sandburrowers doing their thing in the sand nearby. The coral growth, especially the staghorn, is coming along nicely, making it feel less artificial with every passing year. It’s a gentle dive, good for photographers or anyone who enjoys a relaxed poke about for the smaller stuff.

Wreck History - Bicycle Slope, Kubu
- Vessel Type
- unknown
- Cause
- scuttled
Unlike a traditional shipwreck, Bicycle Slope is a deliberately created underwater playground for divers, nestled on a sandy slope between the vibrant Kubu reef and the famous Boga wreck. This artificial reef was constructed from a quirky collection of objects, including motorcycles, bicycles, and various iron and concrete structures. These items were strategically placed to encourage coral growth and attract marine life, transforming a once-barren patch of sand into a thriving, complex habitat.
With a maximum depth of just 15 meters, Bicycle Slope is an incredibly accessible and fun dive suitable for all certification levels. Divers can explore the whimsical structures, now encrusted with sponges and soft corals, and search for the critters that have made them home. It's a fantastic site for underwater photography, offering unique compositions of marine life interacting with everyday objects. Look for frogfish camouflaged on the structures, ghost pipefish hiding in the corals, and schools of colorful reef fish darting between the spokes of a submerged bicycle.
