Dan’s Reef - Lombok & Gili Islands

Hooligan’s Rock lives up to its name. We love this site for its lively currents and the way the two pinnacles burst with colour, dropping from a shallow three metres down to 25. The real show, for us, is in the swim-throughs on the larger pinnacle; they’re just smothered in soft corals and enormous sea fans, gently waving in the flow. Keep an eye out for Hoeven's wrasse flitting between the corals, or a watchful Midnight Angelfish tucked into a crevice. This site is great for seeing the smaller stuff too. We’ve spotted countless Tailspot Cardinalfish darting through the overhangs, and if you’re patient, you might find a Speckled-fin Rockcod or a brilliantly coloured Scarlet wrasse. The currents here mean a good drift, and while it's generally fine, it does help to have a little experience under your belt. For snorkelers, the top of the pinnacles offers a vibrant show, though you’ll want to be comfortable with a bit of a push and pull from the water.
