Eagle corner - Lombok & Gili Islands

Jan's Tunnel at Poor Knights is one of those places that just sticks with you. We love diving it on a sunny day, when the light show inside is at its best. You drop down into the main chamber, maybe 10 or 12 metres, and the visibility averages around 13 metres here, so you get a good sense of the space. The entrance is wide, easy enough for snorkelers, but the real fun is deeper. We like to drift through slowly, letting our eyes adjust as the outside world fades. Inside, the light filters down, creating these amazing shafts that cut through the water. It’s less about big pelagics here, more about the atmosphere and the smaller stuff. You’ll spot schools of demoiselles flickering in the shadows, snapper hovering, and if you look closely, a scorpionfish might be perfectly camouflaged on the rock. The reef outside the tunnel drops away steeply to 21 metres and beyond, a craggy landscape. We’d suggest this site for anyone who appreciates dramatic underwater topography and those magical moments of light play – it’s a real treat for photographers, too.
