Golden Rock - Lombok & Gili Islands

La Vavi always feels a bit like a secret handshake, even though it’s well-known. We love the way the reef just spills out from the shore, an overhang thick with gorgonians that you just don't see everywhere else. Drop down to 20 metres or so and you'll often find blacktip reef sharks napping in the sandy patches, sometimes quite a few of them, just chilling. It’s got a lovely, relaxed drift, perfect for just watching the reef life unfold. The real magic here is in the smaller details. We’ve spent whole dives just poking around the gaps in the coral, spotting tiny juvenile wrasses darting amongst orange-lined triggerfish and the occasional curious spotted toby. Keep an eye out for the big long-nosed butterflyfish, they’re always a treat. When you push out to the deeper blue, we've had encounters with schools of fusiliers, their silver scales flashing as they move as one. It's a fantastic site for anyone who enjoys a gentle current and wants to spend time really observing the reef.
