Scuba Republic House Reef - Raja Ampat

Forget what you think you know about shark dives. The Colosseum, tucked away in the Somosomo Strait, isn't about feeding frenzies or chumming. This is a sanctuary, pure and simple, and it shows. We’ve been here when the water felt like bathwater, sun filtering down through 25 meters of blue, making the coral heads glow. We’ve also been here on days when the current decided to put on a show, zipping us past schools of Pacific Half-and-half Chromis so thick you could almost taste them. What makes this spot special? It’s the sheer numbers, yes, but it’s also the calm. Descending to 19 meters, you’re often greeted by the steady, unhurried patrol of bull sharks. Not one or two, but a dozen or more, gliding past, their eyes curious, not aggressive. We’ve seen blacktip reef sharks weave through the corals, and on a really lucky day, a lone tiger shark might make a majestic pass in the deeper water just beyond the reef edge. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too; the Soft Locust Lobsters are surprisingly shy, and we love spotting the flash of a Coral Beauty against the darker coral. It’s a site that rewards patience. For divers looking for a profound shark encounter, one that feels less like a spectacle and more like an observation, this is our top pick. You’ll be immersed in an active, healthy ecosystem, watching truly wild sharks in their element.
