CRYSTAL 168 - Southern Islands

Crystal 168. Now, if you’re diving Singapore, you’re not coming for the pristine reefs. You’re coming for something a bit different, and Crystal 168 delivers that in spades. This isn't a beautiful wreck, mind you, it’s a dangerous one, a jumbled mess of metal that found its final resting place in just 10 metres of water. We love it because it’s so accessible and yet feels properly wild. It's a fantastic spot for a shallow second dive, or even a full dive if you’re into poking around every crevice. The current can rip here, so we always plan our dive for slack tide, usually an hour either side of high or low. The visibility, let’s be honest, is Singapore visibility, so expect anywhere from 2 to 7 metres, but that just adds to the adventure, right? What you’ll find is a wreck heavily colonised by marine life. Look closely and you’ll spot nudibranchs, often several species on a single beam. We’ve seen moray eels peeking out from under twisted metal plates, and schools of yellowtail scad darting through the superstructure. It’s a photographer’s challenge, for sure, but the eerie light filtering through the murky water and the silhouettes of fish against the backdrop of the wreck make for some moody shots. It suits divers who appreciate the character of a site over conventional beauty, and who enjoy the thrill of discovery in challenging conditions.
