DONG WON NO 56 - Southern Islands

The Dong Won No. 56 isn’t your typical Singapore dive, and that’s precisely why we love it. Sunk in 1977 after springing a leak, this fishing vessel now sits upright at 40 metres, a true ghost ship in the silty depths. Descending, you’re often greeted by the faint outline emerging from the gloom, and it’s always a little eerie, a real sense of history down there. What makes it a standout for us is the penetration. Her holds are open, inviting exploration for those properly trained and equipped. Inside, you’ll find beams of light piercing the darkness, illuminating schools of glassfish that shimmer like scattered diamonds. Outside, the superstructure is draped in soft corals, purple and orange, with nudibranchs inching their way across the growth. Keep an eye out for batfish, sometimes cruising in large schools, and we’ve spotted plenty of lionfish tucked into crevices. This isn't a dive for the novice; currents can be tricky, and the depth demands good air management. We’d suggest going at slack tide to truly appreciate the wreck's quiet majesty. It’s our favourite deep wreck in Singapore, a proper technical challenge with a rewarding pay-off.
