HARAPAN JAYA I - Southern Islands

The Harapan Jaya I, a motor vessel, isn’t about big pelagics or endless reef walls. This is a Singapore wreck dive, and for us, it's one of the best around when you’re looking for character. Sitting upright at 23 metres, she’s a dangerous wreck, yes, but that just adds to her appeal, a proper steel skeleton waiting to be explored. We love dropping onto the stern and seeing the prop shaft still largely intact, then following the deck forward. There are open cargo holds to peer into, dark and inviting, though we always suggest being mindful of silting. Look for the resident batfish schools that hang around the bridge area, so accustomed to divers they barely move. Sometimes, you’ll spot a turtle munching on the growth near the bow, too. Our favourite part has to be the way the light filters through the superstructure on a sunny day, illuminating the damselfish darting in and out of the rusted metal. It’s a dive that rewards careful exploration, perfect for those who appreciate the history and marine life that takes over these artificial reefs.
