KHENGRENG II - Southern Islands

Khengreng II, a tug vessel that went down in 1975, offers a really interesting dive if you know what to look for. It’s not a massive wreck, topping out at 13 metres, but the way it settled makes for some fantastic nooks and crannies. We love the feeling of exploring a proper, working boat, even if it’s now a skeletal frame. You’ll find the wreck lying on its side, mostly intact, with the stern section still clearly defined. Schools of yellowtail scad often swirl around the bow, a shimmering curtain that momentarily blocks the light. We've seen some truly impressive moray eels here, tucked deep into what would have been the engine room, their heads peeking out with an almost curious gaze. Look closely at the hull plates; they’re carpeted in soft corals and sponges, a real explosion of colour against the grey steel. For photographers, the ambient light filtering through the superstructure creates some dramatic shots, especially mid-morning. It’s a site that rewards slow, careful exploration, ideal for divers who appreciate the history and the way nature reclaims these man-made structures.
