MOONLIGHT I - Southern Islands

The *Moonlight I* isn't a deep dive, that's for sure. At a maximum depth of 1 metre, it’s less a dive and more a snorkel, but don't let the shallows fool you. This dangerous wreck, a barge vessel, sits just off the Southern Islands, right at the surface. What we love about it is the immediate, in-your-face nature of the wreck. You can actually see the structural decay from above the water line, a testament to the decades it's spent here. We'd suggest hitting this one on a calm day, ideally at high tide, to get the best visibility over the twisted metal. The *Moonlight I* has become an artificial reef in its own right; you’ll spot small crabs scuttling amongst the rust, and schools of juvenile fish darting through the skeletal remains. It’s perfect for snorkelers, freedivers, or even just keen photographers looking for something a bit different, a real piece of history colonised by the sea. It’s not about big pelagics here, it’s about the texture of the wreck itself and the small critters that call it home.
