MT. AWANG BAZO - Southern Islands

Mt. Awang Bazo is a standout for us in Singapore, not because it’s a technicolor reef, but because it’s a proper wreck dive right on our doorstep. Dropping onto the deck at 10 metres, you immediately feel the history. This old tanker still has its masts clearly defined, which is pretty cool to see rising out of the murk. We love exploring the bow, where the structure is still largely intact, allowing for some tight finning through what remains of the superstructure. Visibility here is often what we affectionately call "Singapore soup," sometimes down to 3 or 4 metres, but that just adds to the adventure. You’ll be searching with your torch for movement, then suddenly, a huge school of yellowtail scad will engulf you. Look closely, and you’ll find nudibranchs crawling across the corroded metal, and we’ve even spotted some sizable groupers tucked into the shadowed recesses. It’s not a vibrant coral garden, but a robust artificial reef. Our advice? Go with a good guide who knows the layout and can point out where the resident cuttlefish like to hide. Best suited for divers who appreciate the character of a wreck and don't mind a bit of a treasure hunt in low visibility.
