POMPONG - Southern Islands

Pompong is a real treat for wreck lovers, especially given its location in Singapore’s Southern Islands. We love this site because it’s a proper wooden vessel, not some jumble of metal, and that makes for a very different dive. Dropping down, you’ll usually find visibility hovering around 5-7 metres, sometimes less, so it’s a dive where you need to get in close. The ship itself lies at a comfortable 10 metres, making it accessible for most certified divers. What makes Pompong a standout, though, is the sheer amount of life that has claimed it. We’ve seen everything from large snapper patrolling the bow to schools of rabbitfish darting through gaps in the hull. Look closely and you’ll spot nudibranchs, flatworms, and crabs tucked into every crevice, blending perfectly with the encrusting sponges. The wreck's wooden structure means you get these fantastic textures, completely unlike a steel wreck, almost organic in how it’s broken down. It feels ancient, like a secret garden under the sea, with light filtering through the gaps where the deck used to be. It’s not a huge wreck, but you can spend a good 45 minutes just exploring its contours and the life within. Our advice: go slow, bring a good torch, and prepare to be surprised by the amount of macro life. It’s perfect for divers who appreciate the history and the quieter side of wreck diving, not just big swim-throughs.
