PULAU SAMBU - Southern Islands

Pulau Sambu’s wreck is one of our favourites in the Southern Islands, a proper historical wreck steeped in story. This isn't some purpose-sunk structure; the motor vessel went down in Selat Durian back in '75, reportedly due to a leak while on passage. The fact it’s a genuine casualty gives it a different feel, a gravitas you don’t always get. Dropping down, the ship’s structure slowly resolves from the blue, usually around 29 metres, sitting upright on the seabed. You can often make out the superstructure, and penetration is possible for the experienced, though we always recommend caution given the age and unknown integrity. Look for the resident batfish, their silhouettes often hanging in the gloom above the deck, and we've seen decent-sized groupers peeking from hull breaches. Visibility can be a bit variable here, so we often aim for slack tide if we can, to reduce sediment and get the clearest views of the wreck’s details. It’s a site that rewards multiple dives, letting you uncover more of its history with each visit.
