UNION STAR 46 - Southern Islands

The *Union Star 46* is our pick for Singapore wreck diving, and we love it precisely because it’s not some perfectly preserved museum piece. It’s a proper, collapsed wreck, a motor vessel that went down in the Southern Islands and now rests at a comfortable 20 metres. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the way light dapples through the broken superstructure. It feels like swimming through a submerged skeleton, with twisted metal beams forming arches and doorways. You’ll find impressive schools of fusiliers here, sometimes so thick they obscure parts of the wreck, and a healthy population of batfish that seem to follow you around. We always spend a good chunk of time exploring the engine room area; it’s largely open and makes for some interesting swim-throughs, just watch your buoyancy. Look closely at the hull plates and you’ll spot nudibranchs, often some colourful flatworms, and we’ve even seen small bamboo sharks tucked away in crevices on occasion. It’s a site that rewards slow exploration and careful observation. Best dived on a slack tide for minimal current, as visibility can be variable in Singapore, but on a good day, it's easily 8-10 metres.
