WESTERN - Southern Islands

Western is our absolute favourite wreck in Singapore, no question. It's a proper adventure, a relatively intact wreck sitting upright on a sandy bottom, draped in fishing nets that give it a ghostly, almost dangerous feel. Dropping down, you can feel the slight current, but it's usually manageable, pulling you gently towards the bow. The stern, though, that’s where we spend most of our time. It's a chaos of twisted metal and growth, now a busy apartment block for so many creatures. We’ve seen barracuda hanging off the bow, inspecting us with that lazy, curious stare, and sometimes a chunky resident grouper will cruise past, looking like he owns the place. Penetration isn't really an option here; the structure is too unstable, too much of a jumble. Instead, we love exploring the exterior, poking around the holds, and running our hands along the encrusted steel. It's a photographer's dream, especially on those rare days when the visibility hits 8-10 metres, allowing the wreck's full silhouette to emerge from the murk. It's not for brand-new divers; you need decent buoyancy and an appreciation for a proper, honest-to-goodness wreck dive, complete with some historical mystery.
