Southwest Pinnacle - Koh Tao

Southwest Pinnacle is where we head when we want a bit more action than the shallow bays offer. It’s a series of granite boulders, a submerged mountain range really, that bottoms out around 28 to 30 metres. We love dropping onto the main pinnacle, feeling that gentle surge as the current plays over the rock, and then watching the schools come alive. You’re immediately surrounded by fusiliers and yellowtail barracuda, often so thick you can barely see your buddy through them. Keep an eye on the blue – we’ve had some cracking encounters with schooling trevally and even the occasional talang queenfish flashing by. Deeper down, look for the honeycomb groupers tucked into crevices, and we always spot a blue-spotted stingray or two resting on sandy patches between the rocks. It’s a site that always feels a bit wilder, a bit more unpredictable than some of Koh Tao’s other spots. We’d suggest saving this one for when you’re comfortable with a bit of current and have a few dives under your belt.
