Bird Island - Sydney & New South Wales

Bird Island, just north of Sydney, is one of our favourite spots when the conditions line up. You’re looking for a calm day, maybe a touch of northerly swell to keep the visibility decent – it averages 11m, which is good enough here. We’re often dropping onto a sandy bottom at around 16m, then working our way across rocky outcrops and weed patches. What makes it special for us is the variety. You’ll kick along, disturbing small flathead from the sand, then spot a banjo shark half-buried, or a Port Jackson tucked under a ledge. We always keep an eye out for the kapala stingaree here, they’re a beauty. The macro life on the weed and rocks is great too; sometimes you just need to slow down and really look. It’s a pretty easy dive, suits anyone comfortable in open water, and a real treat for photographers or anyone who enjoys a relaxed poke around.
